Hispanic Parent Study
Project Overview
Researchers at the Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing conducted a study to understand how cultural values influence parenting within Hispanic families. Researchers leading this study included Dr. Lauren Gulbas, Dr. Esther Calzada and Dr. Monica Faulkner.
Focus groups were held with parents of children ages 0–5, 6–10 and 10–18 and conducted in either English or Spanish. Parents who participated in a focus group were asked to share information about their views on parenting and discipline of their children. The study aimed to help researchers understand how parents use traditional Hispanic values about family to make decisions about their children.
Focus groups were coordinated to be held at locations convenient to most parents. Groups lasted about two hours and to thank parents for their time participating in the study, parents received a $50 gift card.
This project was completed in 2016. Please contact the Principal Investigator with any questions.
